Ce qu’on dit et ce qu’on pense. Petites scènes du monde

Author:

Gabriel Scheffer

Publication date:

1829

The author is able to describe all these situations in which people say something but actually believe something else, in more or less a hundred pages. Each illustration goes with a caption divided in two: on the first half it is marked what it is said, while on the second half what it has actually been thought. For instance, the nephew says to his old uncle: “How happy I am, dear uncle, to see you healthy again”, but he is actually thinking: “There goes away my heritage”.

Combien ce qu’on dit est loin de ce qu’on pense !
Que la bouche et le cœur sont peu d’intelligence !
(Racine)
